k8a18Truth vs. the World |
This collaborative effort is an illustration produced in a couple hours at La Salle Retreat Center, in service of a friend’s presentation. John O’Leary devised the concept from a Friday night homily covering the sacraments. Graphic designer John Mank and I actualized the concept. Mr. Mank’s work appears on the right. This work presents the Lord’s Truth through His Son Jesus Christ, the typeface is unified and centered, presented with simplicity on a simulated parchment background. The work is marker and crayon, what was available in a box of drawing supplies for the retreat. My work appears on the left, representing the world and its distractions. The work involves pencil and marker, a cacophonous competition of boisterous concepts motivated by human emotion. Several typefaces colorfully vie for attention even to the detriment of other concepts in the same column, but certainly intent on out-competing the concepts of truth. In the background, our human achievements and goals sit atop our cultural and commercial mesages, riding over human misery and death. The bottom of the image includes crushed hopes, suffering, anger, human judgment, remorse, and dependency. At the top, the sign proclaiming the “World” appears propped up and falsely-gilt. Our human prowess lords over it. The central “V” is part of Mr. O’Leary’s concept, deriving from the “victim-victor” axis. Produced 6 May 2012 = Tayya 8a18, eight dozen tenth phase (Viðan-Aþniçdejal Xrga, “The Eight Dozen Tenth Life Phase, yet unnamed”), in conjunction with Mr. John Mank.
