Art Produced in Formative Years
My status as an “artist” began by winning a local art contest award at age 6. This award gave me confidence that I could draw. Eventually this confidence grew to include the notion I could draw anything as long as I spent time to attack the problem. This might require a lot of failed efforts. The images in this section of the portfolio include my naïve art, done before “coming of age” (Asmið Galmine). The demarcation between naïve art of the cime xiomðe and that of later years is tayya 4600, Tuesday 15 October 1991, at age 21¼.
Many of the earliest examples of my art are lost; the ones presented here likely were found in sketchbooks or in the former portfolio I used to win a merit scholarship to university to study architecture. Some of the ingredients of my career can be found in between the teenage testosterone-fueled obsession with crushes on girls and the fascination of interstellar battles. These latter diversions contributed in the solution of novel problems, like battle maps for cities. The production of battle maps for teenage war simulations led me to familiarity with topographic maps and geographic information systems, such that I was familiar with contours and latlong years before university. These works are imperfect and some of the features embarrassing. I've grown far more confident about my talent and skill; these works served their purposes well for the most part, so it's alright if you have a laugh at my expense!
If you are a teenager I hope youdo continue drawing what you see and imagine. These drawings may not be perfect, but you are honing your skills. There is no way of telling whether you'll become an influential architect, a noted painter, or a special effects artist for Hollywood. You will be a lot closer to those dreams if you'd only continue drawing and experimenting. Plus, girls love a talented man; you would be amazed at all the portraits I've done, all the doors that have opened through my teenage exercise of artistic skills. Keep drawing, screw up now so you'll be awesome in your twenties!
