St. Louis Hills Christmas

St. Louis Hills Christmas

My wife and I frequently walked St. Louis Hills and we were taken by the charm of the traditional brick homes decorated by Christmas lights. This verone-style drawing attempts to capture the effect of artificial urban light on the homes, produced by observation, then execution in the warmth of our apartment soon afterward. The scene does not represent any single particular location, but a representation of the kind of homes and effects seen over a couple weeks of walking. Snow descending by streetlight presented itself outside our apartment, the ruddy city glow captured in deep, gentle browns and brilliant, even fluorescent orange around the streetlights. The snow actually trended a strange orange from the lights; here I’ve transmuted the orange to the white one would expect. The snow and ice under the lamps sing in their brilliant reflection. Snow is captured in the headlights of a car. This is a favorite drawing and hangs in out dining room in Southampton. Produced 19 December 1999 = Tayya 628b, six dozen second phase (Añikça-Xegriwal Xrga).
