Popping the hood
From the looks of things along a major university thoroughfare, a serene student and faculty campus setting most closely approximates palaces of learning set in a parklike atmosphere. But under the walkways and greenery lie a complex web of site utilities. These utilities — steam, telecommunication, power, chilled water — feed the facilities on this noble Ivy League campus. Within these neighboring facilities, researchers are studying the very nature of the cosmos. Problem is, all of these utilities need to be moved out of the footprint of a new laboratory — without shutting down experiments that cannot be interrupted!
A clear communication tool
Most of Vinci LLC’s construction visualization applies to marketing; this project was developed as a communication tool between the CM, the design team, subcontractors, the university’s facilities department, and its user groups. Vinci’s client was trusted with the orchestration of underground construction. The locations of every utility line in the construction zone were mapped out. Vinci SubVision™ was an ideal way to look under the surface. The Owner, construction, and design team could then intuitively explore the implications of decisions and discuss remedies to conflicts made evident by Vinci’s visualization. The utilities were studied over a period of months across a handful of Vinci projects (M7508, M7803) which included meetings at the university. The data gathered and honed in these projects were then set into a larger complete study of all construction phases. Vinci prepared presentations for user groups though Vinci project A7901, which included enabling work and several Vinci General Construction Sequences™ and detail sequences. In the summer of 2007 Vinci worked closely with the client, making adjustments to the show, then presenting the utilities and enabling work to subcontractors on a two-day onsite pre-bid conference (Vinci project A7A04). Vinci Digital Worksite™ was a great aid to the communication of construction plans for a major academic research project to the students, faculty, and staff at the university and within the Owner-AEC team.
Presentation assistance
Vinci’s strengths aren’t confined to the virtual construction of worksites, but also in Vinci’s ability to clearly present concepts to collaborators and an audience. Vinci accompanied the client to AEC on-site team meetings navigating and narrating the utility “spaghetti”. Vinci also presented the utilities and enabling work to subcontractors, using Vinci’s hyperlinked presentation and Digital Worksite™ both to describe the issues, then to field subcontractor questions. Vinci LLC has assisted its clients with a dozen presentations over the past half dozen years. These assisted presentations were normally high-stakes, must-win efforts.
