No. 8: Vinci A80B6University Art Museum Expansion |
Autumn 2008, I had an interview with a British author for a mathematics book. This same month saw three fast-track must-win projects, same client, same campus (A80A4, A80B0, and A80B6). I went into production mode and built these on a newly acquired dataset that did the heavy lifting for general existing conditions around the sites. These made for a rich environment that exuded knowledge of the site. (Next Project→)
I love this level-5½ project because of the sensuous terrain, the underground conditions, the underground extension of the existing architecture, and the relation of the new architecture with the existing. I was really impressed with the worksite layout, the deep excavation. It’s a very three-dimensional job. The rich context really makes for excellent user group vignettes. On its own, this project is an excellent example of many of Vinci LLC’s capabilities. It was one of the most convincing and beautiful projects I'd done at the time, and stood till the next year as my very favorite even though it was a loser. As a consolation, the other two were hits, though A80A4 came back to us as the successful A8818 in summer 2011.
Two of my closest client representatives directed this project along with the other two. They are easygoing, confident, and knowledgeable construction logistics strategists; I’d worked with them for 5 years by the time we engaged in this project. We’d produced over a dozen projects at this point. They’ve recently moved to another builder with a different focus, but I still miss working with them very much.
