Graceful, Peaceful Enlargement

An ivy university is expanding a noble academic hall toward a major thoroughfare. The expansion adds space mostly underground, honoring the old hall and covering a former underused grassy courtyard with a screened glass canopy. Academic offices will lie along the curb under a new sidewalk that weaves among gardens. The place will be a delightful student space once its built. The worksite is tight against the old hall and squeezed by the two-lane thoroughfare. The site will be disruptive to traffic, but the University has provided a plan.

The Dig, The Pick, The Signage

Vinci’s client has a good plan that honors the traffic strategy and perimeter the University has laid out. The work involves digging a deep pit with bank retention along the sidewalk. The dig enters rock and is hauled out one side, because the other side has another underground structure that can't be driven over. Everything will come out of a single gate. The field office compound sits on one side of the old hall on land already disturbed during enabling work not in contract.

Construction on a busy campus warrants attention to worksite context. Vinci displays most of the work through worksite details addressing general construction, temporary pit access, and retaining and foundation walls. Vignettes studying logistics, vehicular and pedestrian traffic, major steel elements, and late stage logistics validation accompany the details. Sections through the site are helpful.
